Jingjing's Development & Growth

This section will allow me to seek my further practical improvements to enhance my leadership skills
Goal 1

To improve my self-confidence within Self-Development

In efforts to develop my leadership traits, I will articulate the theory on trait approach we learned from class and textbook with real life experiences to continue improving on my trait on self-confidence.

I know that being a strong and successful leader cannot be without self-confidence, and I lack self-assurance and self-confidence according to the leadership trait questionnaire. I cannot let the lack of confidence impede me from developing my leadership skills. So I decided to strengthen my self-confidence from the trait approach perspective we learned from class. This will help me instill a confidence in myself.

I will have two action steps to put my development objective on building self-confidence into practice. First, I will work on this weakness from lectures and classrooms. I am going to record down the times I actively answer questions and discuss problems with classmates from my classes and discussions, and then assess my behavior in a weekly process. This will motivate me to be interactive with peers and build my self-confidence through answering questions in class. For example, usually while I am in class, I most likely just do my own stuff and concentrate on my laptop, and do not care about what my other classmates doing and their reactions to certain question. I am not being active in class because I always think that I might make mistakes with what I am about to say, and others may start laughing at me. Now I understand this way of approaching learning lacks. I will definitely start motivating myself to be more interactive with peers from classrooms and record my accomplishments. The next step I will work on is outside of classrooms, my social network. I have been doing pretty good on the communication skills and making friends with people of different backgrounds and perspectives. But I find myself feel really comfortable amongst lower level within organizations by being friendly with everyone. This is another situation of not being confident because I don’t like to challenge myself for the higher standard. I am going to also promote myself to start running for some positions that are on the executive board so I can further practice my abilities and skills all-around. I have been in the honor society Phi Eta Sigma for three semesters as just a member, so for my next short term goal, I want to apply for a higher position to serve in the social committee and start planning activities for students on campus for our honor society.

Action Plan: 1. Time: Fall 2010 semester

Action: To be more interactive with peers from classrooms and record my accomplishments.

Measurement: Take initiates and gathering group members before they contact me for each one of coming group project.

Time: Spring 2011 semester

Action: To apply for a higher position to serve in the social committee and start planning activities for students on campus for my honor society Phi Eta Sigma.

Measurement: Rush for Social Chair in Social events plan committee.

Goal 2

To enhance my Self-Management skills on Technical and Conceptual Level skills within skill approach

To practice and develop my leadership skills, I also will utilize the theory on skill approach we learned from class with real life experiences to continue improving my skills on both technical and conceptual levels.

Now after I did all three assessments and questionnaires on trait, skill and style approach, I am clear about which areas that I need to contribute more and they are related to each other. The reason why I am lacking in self-confidence is because I do not possess the technical skills as well as conceptual skills. Human skills are important in every level, but being only good at human skills is not enough for leading. I feel there is a need for me to further improve with my skills on both technical level and conceptual level.

To incorporate my actions for enhancing my skills on both, first I would start with technical skills. I will start to cut off the times when I am hanging out with friends and doing nothing and then fully use the time to concentrate on the academic materials. As a college student, my priority is to study well. Everything has to come after grades; nothing can be successful and strong without solid grades. I realize sometimes I spend too much time with friends, people and relationships, and truncate my time for study. Now I will prepare to go to the library right after each lecture I take, and spend at least an hour to fully absorb the materials the professor taught in class and try to apply them into solving problems. I will subliminally spend more time on study and learning process, day to day. Hopefully I will see some progress after the second round of exams coming up in three weeks. Also I would like to keep myself calm to prioritize everything before actions, carefully thinking through what is the task that is most important to me and what is less critical. I believe in this way, my technical skill will be strengthened. Secondly, to improve my conceptual skills, I would like to challenge myself more with higher-level responsibilities and duties in my organization. In this way, throughout the experiences and activity planning, my conceptual skills will be improved as well as my self-confidence. I will carefully plan out a successful event while taking every aspect into consideration if I get selected for my honor society Social Committee. I am looking forward to the upcoming challenges with both study and activities, and I believe it is essential for me to balance my life and be a well-rounded individual. So my short-term goal for improving my conceptual skill is to plan and organize an activity for my honor society.
