Leadership to Me
Leadership growth is one area I strive to develop throughout my college career as I feel it will be very important for me in my future profession. I have attended all four I-Leadership program since my freshmen year. Before, leadership to me was only about being on the top of the social hierarchy within an organization--- president, captain, chief, etc. After the team building activities within each leadership program, I have realized that leadership is not merely a function of how much power and influence ones has, but also the level of their communication skills, interpersonal skills, cooperate abilities and adaptive capabilities. Learning to improve on ones leadership skills is a constantly evolving and changing process so that one will be learning at all stages of their lives.

I have taken leadership roles in the past such as the gymnastics team captain and woodwind chief in my orchestra and band. During my freshmen year, my close friends and I started a student RSO called “BizChina,” to create a platform to encourage communications and interactions between American and Chinese college students who are interested in business. From Treasurer to Public Relations to Social Chair, I have gained experience and enhanced my ability to handle a variety of tasks within an organization that has people from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, as an international student from China, I hope to one day become a strong enough leader to be able facilitate and influence interactions between China and the United States in the arena of business.

I believe fundamental leadership skills will be a valuable asset regardless of where I am and how old I am. These crucial abilities will benefit me while I am in college as a student, as well as when I step into the workplace. Holding to this belief, I am pursuing the leadership certificate as one of my short-term goals before I graduate from college. Hopefully I will apply all the knowledge and skills I learned from college to my future career path.

Role Model

When talking about personal role models, there is always one I have to mention --- my dad. Without my father’s help and support, I would not be who I am today. In other words, he taught me to be a good person, good student, and a good daughter. I learned so much from him such as adapting to change, problem-solving skills and being optimistic with life. I am proud to say that my loyalty, honesty, and other basic moral traits were the product of my father's influence. I see him as my own role model within my life because he is constantly encouraging me to improve in all aspects of my development, and always does so in a cheerful manner. My dad started his own advertising business in Beijing in 1996. By observing how he dealt with management, clients, and pressure situations with grace and a strong drive, I realized I want to become like him one day in the future! Because of the influence my dad has on me, I am not taking my college career for granted, as I make the most of each and every educational opportunity here in the United States. Most of my motivation to excel in school comes from the encouragement and sacrifice of my family in China.

Core Values
Core values are the values each individual holds differently to define his/her character. They are the standards and principles which are very important to help guide one’s actions and to help with the decision making process. Understanding my own core values are crucial so that I know where I am heading in life. It’s not only help with the decision making process but more importantly, the core values will help me set up my personal goals for both short-term and long-term engagements.
From the class activity, I know my core and supporting values are “knowing myself”, “being accepted and needed by others”, “never be lonely”, “bring insights to others and influence others”. To summarize, my values are “Respect”, “Friendliness”, “Responsibility”, “Insightful”, “integrity”, “open-minded” and “optimistic”.

By knowing myself well, I can utilize the strengths that I obtain to fit them into different situation for my leadership growth, meanwhile, I can still improve and work on my weak aspects. Never wanting to be alone just shows one of my personalities in that I am outgoing and feel comfortable in large groups of unfamiliar people. I have strong communication skills and love to listen to others; I believe this is an important skill for accomplishing tasks within a group or team. Realizing that I do not like being alone and seek the approvals of my peers, I am eager to be accepted by people around me. Also, I am glad whenever classmates, friends, and peers need my help. I want to feel like I can be helpful and a good resource for my friends and colleagues. Furthermore, being a leader, I hope I can also bring some insights and creative ideas to the group and inspire others with great opinions.

These core values will guide to become a better leader and really help me to strengthen my abilities by knowing who I am, what I am good at, and who I am going to be. With all my core values in place, I will demonstrate my skills so that I can constantly learn and develop as a leader. Values motivate me to desire to be a leader and help me seek out my own ways on how to be a leader.
